The so-called three-year teas, such as kukicha tea and bancha tea, are the most commonly used drink in the macrobiotic diet. Bancha is a very aromatic tea made from green tea leaves harvested after three years on the plant itself. Kukicha tea is made from twigs of the same green tea, its main characteristic being its low theine content (practically 0%), making it a very mild tea that preserves the properties of the original plant. As it remains in the plant for three years , it is richer in minerals, which makes it an ideal choice as a daily drink. Matcha tea also has an important presence in the macrobiotic diet, being widely used as an ingredient in different desserts and smoothies, as well as being consumed as an infusion. Due to its mild caffeine content, matcha is an ideal substitute for coffee when it comes to providing energy, and is known for its high antioxidant power. Another tea consumed within the macrobiotic diet is sencha tea, an aromatic variety of roasted green tea from Japan.
